Sally Gibbs of Tauranga Ramblers took victory in the New Zealand Marathon title in Rotorua on Saturday with teammate Jess Ruthe placing second. In calm sunny conditions Gibbs ran 2.45.58 for a two and a half minute victory over Ruthe (2.48.37).
In the men's event, which was won by Japanese athlete Masataka Uchino, Steven O'Callaghan (Lake City) was with the leaders early on and ran a strong race to hold onto fourth overall and third in the New Zealand Championships. He was the first local athlete across the line in 2.33.00.
3511 athletes completed the full Marathon in the 50th year of the event.
The Half Marathon event was also well supported with 1817 finishers. Victories went to Mikayla Nielsen of Hamilton City Hawks (1.26.11) and Auckland's Johnathan McKee (1.07.48).
